“He loved Glen Ellyn,” according to his daughter, Susan Edwards.
He also served Glen Ellyn as president of the Glen Ellyn Rotary Club in 1952, the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce in 1955 and was the chairman of the Glen Ellyn Historical Site Commission. In 1979, he also served as director of the First Community Bank of Glen Ellyn.
As a well known village historian, he was responsible for collecting and sorting hundreds of old photographs of early Glen Ellyn, which are now on display in Stacy’s Tavern, a valuable part of collections owned by the Glen Ellyn Historical Society.
The Hesterman family owned the land at Main Street and Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn, which later was used by Lee Hesterman for his car dealership, Hesterman
Motors which was in business 1938 and 1958,
Lee Hesterman converted the dealership to a bowling alley in 1958 and named it Hesterman Bowl, the Family Bowl.. In 1984, he sold the bowl, and retired to private life, with his wife , Harriet, in his beloved Glen Ellyn, and Green Lake, Wisconsin.
Lee Hesterman passed away in 1997, leaving a strong legacy of friends and admirers.
